This search page offers multiple ways to search the dictionary database. For
words in general topics, try the "Search By Topic" dropdown list. For best
results with specific words, use the yellow Main Search Box (below) in
combination with the "Pattern Match" quick filter box, which is used to filter
(and refine) the results of any database search. You can also use this "Pattern
Match" box without a preliminary (main) search to pattern match words within the
whole dictionary or selected fields. Try to "stack" multiple pattern matches in
order to really refine your search!
Clicking the little 'plus'
button next to a word opens a box that may contain additional information about
that word.
Search Notes: To search the TERM and DEFINITION fields for a word or phrase use
the box below. To search an exact phrase (more than one word) please include
quotes - e.g., "hunting deer". Similarly, if you want to search for prefixes of
words, encase the term in quotes with an asterisk (e.g, "snow*" ). To perform a
prepositional search use one of the following: AND, OR, AND NOT, NEAR without
quotes (e.g., snow NEAR rain).
